Genesys nurses file unfair labor practice charges against Teamsters | Business [Video]

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJRT) – Two nurses at Ascension Genesys have filed unfair labor practice charges against their union, Teamsters Local 332.

The nurses allege that union leaders told them if they didn’t sign paperwork that would deduct dues from their paycheck, they would lose their jobs.

The National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation is representing the nurses. President Mark Mix says even in a state like Michigan that repealed Right to Work, the threat is illegal.

“In Michigan now, a worker can be fired for failure to tender dues or fees to a union. But the union can not have you fired simply for not signing a dues checkoff agreement,” explained Mix.

Essentially, the nurses still are required to pay dues. But how they are paid, if they come out of the employee’s paycheck or if they are paid separately, is up to the employee.
