The SpaceX CEO, 53, appeared at Washington DC’s Capital One Arena on Monday after Trump was sworn in as president for the second time.
He said onstage: “Elections come and go, some are important and some are not, but this one really mattered and I just want to say thank you for making it happen.”
Musk then shocked viewers by putting his hand on his chest before raising his arm out with an open hand.
He made the gesture twice in a move that some online likened to a fascist salute used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.
