HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — In the race for mayor of Hagerstown, a second write-in candidate has thrown their hat in the ring.

Whitney Burnett, program director for a local nonprofit, joins local small business owner Mark Wilks as a write-in.

Each hopes to prevail over Bill McIntire, who finished first in the May primary. Stephen Shutte, the candidate who finished second behind McIntire, withdrew from the race last month, citing demands at his job.

As for Burnett, her write-in campaign is focused on the unhoused and the cost of housing.

“The homeless issue, I would love to address that. But also beyond that, the cost of housing for working-class citizens. It’s becoming more difficult to afford to live here,” Burnett said.

Incumbent Mayor Tekesha Martinez chose not to seek another term.
