With just three days before the start of the school year in Hawaii, nearly 2,900 keiki will not have a bus to ride due to a crippling shortage of bus drivers.

HONOLULU (Island News) — With just three days before the start of the school year in Hawaii, hundreds of keiki will not have a bus to ride due to a crippling shortage of bus drivers.

Hawaii public schools head back to class on Monday, Aug. 5.

With a shortage of nearly 90 drivers, the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) is temporarily suspending 108 bus routes leaving nearly 2,900 students without a ride.

The DOE says the suspended routes on O‘ahu are for middle/intermediate and high school students in the ‘Aiea-Moanalua-Radford and Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua Complex Areas.

The suspended routes in East Hawai‘i Island are for all grade levels in the Hilo-Waiākea and Ka‘ū-Kea‘au-Pāhoa Complex Areas, the DOE said.
