LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Parents should be on the alert while picking out toys and goods for children to open on Christmas.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 167,000 children ages 14 and younger went to the emergency room for toy-related injuries in the U.S. last year.
Doctors with Norton Children’s said small, easy-to-swallow pieces are often to blame. Button batteries in particular can cause serious internal damage or even death when swallowed.
“Make sure you’re paying attention to the recommended ages on the products and keeping toys separate, especially in the homes that have children of multiple ages,” said Kinzie Evrard, Norton Children’s Prevention and Wellness. “Have separate toy bins and things that once the toys can be put away it’s easy to store up, out of little hands.”
