DES MOINES, Iowa — Earlier this week, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced disaster proclamations for multiple counties after three bird flu cases were detected in flocks over the past week.
On Thursday, a local butcher from Old Station Craft Meats in Waukee told Local 5 News, that the cases could trickle down to the prices Iowans pay for goods at stores if cases continue to rise.
When millions of hens are potentially impacted, distributors say consumers will notice egg prices rise, because of that egg supply having to be composted.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a 4 million bird site, if it’s only a 4,000 bird site, this disease is lethal for poultry,” said Iowa State University veterinary medicine associate professor Mohamed El-Gazzar.
He added chickens and turkeys are most notably affected by the H5 Bird Flu.
