Hundreds of educator openings in MSCS still open as first week of school ends [Video]

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The first week of classes for thousands of Memphis and Shelby County School students is complete, but not without a rocky start.

Memphis Shelby County School parents are ending the first week of school frustrated.

“My son is in Craigmont. He does not have a schoolteacher right now, I believe it’s science if I am not mistaken,” said Erica Robinson, parent of 6 MSCS students.

Parents said the first week was frustrating; they said some of their kids are starting the school year without a certified educator in the classroom so far.

“He’s had a different teacher every day of this week and he has no set teacher,” said Brittney Cook, first-year, MSCS parent.

In July, there were more than 500 teacher openings. MSCS superintendent, Dr. Marie Feagins, said that number was down to 258 just a week before school started.
