RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – It has long been a pastime and one of the most popular recreational activities in the Mount Rushmore State.

With the Black Hills and Custer State Park deer hunting seasons along with fall turkey hunting season kicking off Friday, this time of the year typically tends to be a popular time for South Dakotans to go out on a hunt.

However, with the thrills that come with taking down a prized animal, safety should always be kept in the back of one’s mind.

“Every year, we get a handful of lost hunters. It can be hunters, hikers, but this is definitely the season for the lost hunter time so,” Captain for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office Kraig Wood said.
