The National Hurricane Center said Milton’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 90 mph as of 1 a.m. ET Thursday, making it a Category 1 hurricane.
The NHC said the storm was about 40 miles south southwest of Orlando and about 65 miles west southwest of Cape Canaveral. It said a flash flood emergency continued over parts of west-central Florida with damaging winds reaching the state’s east coast.
Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida as an “extremely dangerous” Category 3 storm on Wednesday evening.
Milton had been a Category 5 storm on Monday, but had dropped down to a Category 4 on Wednesday morning. The NHC had previously predicted the storm would remain a hurricane as it crossed the Florida peninsula.
