Iconic Prairie du Chien hamburger stand marks 115 years in business [Video]

PRAIRIE du CHIEN, Wis. (WMTV) – A business in Prairie du Chien is giving the term ‘small business’ a whole new meaning.

Pete’s Hamburger Stand may be physically small, but it’s impact on the community over the last century has been great.

Since opening in 1909, Pete’s Hamburger Stand has become well-known across the nation.

“Lots of people stop by and they’ll say ‘We smelled you when we were coming across the bridge from Iowa and we gotta stop by.’ Or ‘We saw you on some show,’” co-owner Bill Huser said.

Only open April through October on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, customers come from far and wide to get their hands on an original Pete’s hamburger.

“A lot of people say they made the trip just to Prairie for it, to try the burgers,” co-owner Mary Huser said,

Bill says, while the lines for a burger are sometimes long, it’s worth the wait.
