INDOT launches safe zones program to enforce speed limit cameras in work zones starting 2025 | News [Video]

Officials hope the initiative will reduce accidents and save lives, with plans to expand the system statewide in the coming years.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Starting January 1, 2025, a program called Safe Zones will begin in Indianapolis, using cameras to monitor and enforce speed limits in work zones which could expand across the state. 

In 2023 alone, 33 people were killed and more than 1,700 were injured in Indiana Department of Transportation work zones. 

But now, a new program called Safe Zones aims to change that, starting with the Clear Path I-465/I-69 construction zone on Indianapolis’ northeast side.

Cameras will be installed at worksites to monitor vehicle speeds. If a vehicle is detected traveling 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit, the system will capture an image of the license plate. Once the data is validated, a citation will be issued to the vehicle’s owner …
