JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Starting at 9:00 Friday evening, people arrived at a lot off Highway 17 near Lexington for a trail ride party after the homecoming football game for Holmes County Central High School.
Joe Johnson lives near the property and owns it. He told WLBT 3 on Your Side he initially thought he heard fireworks.
“Gunshots start ringing out. I said, ‘Man, that‘s machine gun fire,’” Johnson said.
Alana Johnson attended the party and said she and her friends were getting ready to leave right before shots were fired.
“We all ran, and we all ducked down and hid behind the van, and you could feel the bullets hitting the ground and just constant everything,” she said. “We had lots of friends who were there too. We weren’t sure where they were or if they were okay. It was just, it was a lot.”
