Jefferson County breaks ground on new animal control facility [Video]

The Jefferson County Commission has broken ground on a new animal control intake facility in Birmingham.The new build is expected to cost more than $25M and has been years in the making.Jefferson County bought the 6.5-acre property back in 2021. They broke ground on Wednesday, and the project should take about a year to finish.The facility will be located in Oxmoor Corporate Park and is one of a few new additions to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.GBHS plans to build an adoption and medical facility adjacent to the intake facility. Joe Knight, president pro-tem of the Jefferson County Commission, said the goal is to create a one-stop shop for cats and dogs who are brought in through animal control.They’ll come in for initial evaluations, then go next door to be treated for injuries or illnesses.
