AMERICUS, Ga. — Former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral procession begins Saturday in Americus, Georgia, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.
The city is about 11 miles East of Plains and Archery, where the 39th president grew up. The funeral procession starting in Americus is significant, partially because of the Carters’ love for and longtime support of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.
The hospital is serving as his temporary resting place ahead of the funeral procession Saturday. Down the road from the hospital is Georgia Southwestern State University, where the president began his higher education. Mrs. Carter also completed her education there.
University President Dr. Michelle Johnston said she’s eager to welcome visitors to campus who are coming to pay their respects for the Carters.
“I think coming to this Presidential Plaza as a start is really, really powerful,” she said.
