KAT extends free rides to warming centers amid cold front [Video]

KAT provided free rides to warming centers during cold weather, helping 200 residents, and plans to resume the service with more freezing temperatures expected.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. — Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) has provided free rides to warming centers during recent cold weather, helping 200 people from Jan. 6 through Jan. 15.

The initiative, in partnership with the Knox County Office of Housing Stability, aims to ensure that vulnerable residents can access safe shelter as temperatures plummet. Riders requesting transportation to a warming center can do so for free by notifying the bus driver.

“We wanted to step up and help as much as we possibly could,” Isaac Thorne, director of auxiliary transit, said. “We worked with Aaron [with the Office of Housing Stability] to find the most convenient way to ensure people could get to the warming centers.”
