Lapeer restaurant owners raise concerns over minimum wage increase | Business [Video]

LAPEER, Mich. (WJRT) – Restaurant Owners and staff in Lapeer are speaking out about recent changes by the State Supreme Court.

In late July, the high court ruled the Michigan Legislature could not adopt and amend two ballot initiatives in the same session. That paved the way for a $2 increase to the minimum wage, set to take effect as soon as February.

“Do you want the courts rewriting laws?” asked Rep. Phil Green (R-Lapeer). “We have multiple different legal events happening with this that the Michigan Supreme Court has rewritten the law, but apparently the legislature can’t do that.”

It’s more than just the minimum wage. The decision also eliminated the tipped minimum wage and all workers are provided the opportunity to earn paid time off. Restaurant owners are more concerned about those elements.
