Maroochydores Nevermind Cafe, a LGBTQI+ community safe space, struggles to stay open [Video]

A Sunshine Coast cafe set up to provide a “safe space” for the LGBTQI+ community is fighting for survival.

Nevermind Cafe in Maroochydore has turned to crowdfunding to stay open as increasing costs puts it on the brink of closure.

“We’ve been trying so hard to keep it open, but small business is tough,” Paige*, who co-owns the cafe with her wife Stacey, told 7NEWS.

The cafe was opened a year ago as a “passion project” for the couple who “saw a need in the community for a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community, the neurodivergent community and the First Nations community”, Paige said.

The “non-judgmental” business includes features such as black walls to combat overstimulation, fidget toys and games, as well as providing space for community events and meet-ups.

“We allow people to be who they truly are,” Paige said.
