Workers in Texas have sued a Mexican energy company relating to a leak at an oil refinery last week which resulted in the deaths of two people and injured dozens of others.
The lawsuit, as reported by Reuters, was filed by three injured workers and accuses the gas company Pemex of negligence.
Pemex, which stands for Petrelos Mexicanos, is a Mexican state-owned gas company with operations across 20 countries. According to Reuters, Pemex shared ownership of the plant in Deer Park, Texas, with Shell until 2022, after Pemex bought Shell out of their $526 million 50 percent stake in the plant.
On October 10, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported a leak that resulted in the release of hydrogen sulfide, a byproduct of the oil refining process which can become toxic in high concentrations.
