AUGUSTA– Sports betting in Maine has been legal for a little over a year now and according to regulators, the revenues have been right where they predicted they would be prior to legalization.
“I think it was a smooth opening. We haven’t had a lot of complaints.” says Milton Champion, the director of Maine’s Gambling Control Unit, an arm of the Maine Department of Public Safety, and charged with enforcing regulations related to gambling in the state.
Sports betting in Maine went live in early November 2023 and since then have produced around $6 million in state revenue.
Which Champion says is right in the ballpark of what they predicted before launch, he adds it’s not a constant flow like casinos. “Our two busiest times of the year now is the NFL season and, of course, March Madness with college basketball.”
