The fight over Milwaukee’s official flag continues. Eight years ago, the people’s flag, with the sun rising over the lake, won a design competition but was never officially adopted. “I think the best path forward is to put it to the voters,” Alder Peter Burgelis said. Burgelis is looking to finish unfinished business at Tuesday’s common council meeting. Since July, Burgelis has been fighting to make the people’s flag the official city flag. Knowing he didn’t have enough support, he suggested putting the matter to a referendum, letting the voters decide. “You would need 10 votes to pass. I had nine; nine votes isn’t 10. And with the threat of a mayoral veto, there’s no sense in having that loss or having that controversy,” Burgelis said.
