GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Montana Air National Guard is set to undergo significant upgrades at its base located at Great Falls International Airport. The 120th Airlift Wing will begin converting facilities and infrastructure for the new C-130J Super Hercules aircraft starting in October 2025.
The conversion process will include hangar remodels, repairs to flightline markings, and the construction of an unpaved runway. These upgrades are part of a larger effort to modernize the C-130 fleet and improve training and operational capabilities.
The new C-130J model aircraft, which are expected to arrive in March 2026, will replace the existing C-130H models. This transition is anticipated to enhance unit capabilities with more powerful engines, modernized avionics, and improved fuel efficiency. Local noise studies conducted in 2024 have shown that the C-130J aircraft produce less noise pollution than their predecessors.
