BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The CEO of a research facility where 43 primates escaped said Sunday night that more than half of them have been captured.

Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard confirmed that 25 monkeys have been captured as of Sunday evening.

“All are in good heath,” he said. “Others remain close by in trees.”

Yemassee Police received a report at around 1 p.m. Wednesday that a group of Rhesus Macaque monkeys escaped from their enclosures at the Alpha Genesis Research Center. The facility, located off Castle Hall Road, is within minutes of the small town of Yemassee.

Greg Westergaard, the CEO of Alpha Genesis, says the monkeys are staying close in the area grabbing food from the staff and watching him and his team at the lab

Teams from Alpha Genesis have been monitoring the area where the monkeys have remained and were said to be watching staffers.
