The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is back with its hit segment — Mystery Monday!This week they posted a video of a strange creature taking a stroll in the shallow water of a trout stream.If you didn’t know them before, meet the hellgrammite!They are the larval form of a dobsonfly, an aquatic insect that lives in fast-flowing streams and is mostly active at night. Shawn Good is a Fisheries Biologist in the department. “Most of the time you run into the nocturnal stage if you spend time in the streams, flipping rocks or rolling logs over,” he said. “But they’re a little bit intimidating. They can be 3-4 inches in length, they kind of look like a caterpillar creeping along the bottom, and they’ve got these big pinchers coming off their heads” said Good.Hellgrammites can stay in the water for up to three years before going through a metamorphosis …
