New EV program fee added to many Mass. electric bills this summer [Video]

Eversource customers may have noticed a new fee on their electric bills that started showing up this summer. It’s labeled “Electric Vehicle Program” and is in addition to the energy efficiency surcharges. This fee is a pretty small amount on a given electric bill — on a $400 bill, for instance, the charge added up to $1.44. Eversource says prior to this summer, the EV charge was included as part of the overall delivery fee and was not separated into its own line item.National Grid has a similar surcharge, which has actually been on bills for quite some time. These fees were authorized by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities in December 2022, as a way to encourage the building of more electric vehicle charging stations.
