Oak Ridge High School students helping rebuild I-40 as part of learning program [Video]

The students are working with a welding and metal fabrication company from Knoxville through a work-based learning program.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Students enrolled in work-based learning programs at Oak Ridge High School have the chance to get hands-on experience before graduation. Two students also have the chance to work on a project of a lifetime — rebuilding Interstate 40 after Hurricane Helene.

A Knoxville welding and metal fabrication company teamed up with the school to give two students experience in welding. One of the projects they’ve been tasked with is to help build concrete forms for the Interstate 40 rebuilding project after sections were damaged and swept away due to Hurricane Helene.

Jason Phelps, a shop supervisor with the company, said the students helped build large frames to help with the project. With their help, the company was able to put the project ahead of schedule.
