SERGEANT BLUFF — Friday’s Class 3A state quarterfinal couldn’t have started worse for the Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School football team.
But 47 unanswered points sure turned things around.
The No. 2-ranked Warriors fell behind 14-0 before even running an offensive play, then trailed 21-6 after running just one play on offense — though that went for a 78-yard Joe Hardy touchdown run.
“It was the worst possible start that we could have had,” said SB-L head coach Justin Smith. “It was kind of a situation where they made one play, and we made four plays for them. But after that, we handled it well.”
But then SB-L put the clamps on the Nevada offense, and Sergeant Bluff-Luton throttled the Cubs along the offensive and defensive lines to secure a 53-21 victory in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School.
