SYRACUSE, N.Y. — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he’s pushing for “no red tape” when local leaders in Rome seek federal funds, as the city continues to recover from a devastating tornado.

Speaking at a press conference at SUNY ESF on Monday, Schumer specifically mentioned conversations he had with two federal agencies — the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Small Business Administration (SBA) — about fast-tracking the process to help the people of Rome.

Schumer also said he spoke to Governor Kathy Hochul and Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, whom the senator called a “friend”, about the ongoing recovery efforts.

The Senate Majority Leader said he wants to get federal dollars to the battered city as soon as possible.

Rome Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan, a Republican, praised the senator’s efforts in a written statement released by Schumer’s office.
