South Bay officials call for end of tolls on State Route 125 [Video]

Request comes as regional transportation agency SANDAG faces investigation and lawsuits over mishandling of toll revenues.

San Diego City Councilmember Vivian Moreno, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, and State Assemblymember David Alvarez say the regional transportation agency SANDAG should stop collection of tolls.

“The citizens of Chula Vista are being triple taxed,” said Chula Vista Mayor John McCann. “They are already paying the gas tax, they are paying the [TransNet] tax from SANDAG, and they are paying the toll.”

The demand from elected officials comes as SANDAG looks to address a number of controversies over the collection of tolls on State Route 125.

Those controversies include accusations from former executives who say they were fired after reporting they found possible mishandling of tolls, internal and state audits of the toll revenues, as well as the sudden departure of SANDAG head, Hasan Ikhrata, in December 2023.

CBS 8 reached out to SANDAG for a response. This article will be updated with that response.
