GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – As upstate counties continue to recover from Helene, they’re also making plans for the financial burden the storm left behind.
Monday, Spartanburg County leaders approved an initial plan for funding recovery efforts in the county council meeting.
“The amount of woody debris that’s been generated by this storm has been unprecedented,” said Emergency Operations Services director Doug Bryson.
Recovery mode comes with a hefty price tag. But, Spartanburg leaders say they have the finances to weather the storm.
“We haven’t even begun to tally everything. We have so many different expenses during the heat of the battle, so to speak, with meals and generators and renting equipment,” says Bryson.
Bryson explained debris pickup and contractor services are additional costs. They’re spending about $100,000 a day on pick-up now.
“We won’t be surprised if we go into 2025 and still be removing debris,” he said.
