DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA) – Reading and writing are some of the basic fundamentals in life.

These skills could be used to communicate, read a book, or even write a story.

However, according to ED.org there is currently a literacy crisis in the country.

While literacy continues to decline across the United States, writer and producer Sean Covel is working to make an impact through his own storytelling.

Covel grew up in Edgemont, South Dakota, and attended the University of Nebraska.

He eventually moved to California where he received his master’s.

“I spent 15 years in Los Angeles traveling around producing movies and stuff,” said Covel. “I’ve done 10 movies now, but the most well-known without question would be Napoleon Dynamite.”

The popular movie turned 20 in August, and two decades later people can still relate to the iconic film.
