WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President-elect Donald Trump recently picked former WWE executive Linda McMahon to be the country’s next Secretary of Education. She still has to be confirmed by the Republican-led Senate next year.
However, Trump has also said he wants to eliminate the Department of Education.
“We’re going to end education coming out of Washington, D.C. We’re going to close it up,” Trump said during a campaign video called “Agenda47.″
This week, Trump said McMahon, his former Small Business Administration director, will “spearhead that effort.”
The Education Department provides roughly 14 percent of K-12 public school budgets. Universities rely on it for research grants, and many college students depend on the agency to help them with financial aid. The department also gives guidance for civil rights protections.
Eliminating the Department of Education would take an act of Congress.
