PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Christmas is less than two weeks away. While many are ordering last minute items online, others are looking to take advantage of those packages.
According to Vienna Police Chief Carl Powell, it’s not uncommon for random people to snatch packages off porches this time of year.
Statistics from chamberofcommerce.org show that more than 25% of consumers have had a package stolen with nearly half of those porch pirate incidents occurring at single unit residential homes.
Good news, there are things you can do to help prevent package theft this holiday season.
Chief Powell’s tips for keeping your packages staff include:
- Have tracking on your packages
- Have a neighbor pick up your package if you know you won’t be home when it arrives
- Have security cameras set up — Even if you don’t have cameras, a sign that says “Smile you’re on camera” can help prevent someone from coming up on your porch
