RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – In the aftermath of Thursday’s Lemmon Valley flooding and evacuations, Truckee Meadows Water Authority crews are repairing and restoring the broken water main on Matterhorn Drive.
TMWA says the repairs will take a couple of days. If they can start filling it out tomorrow, it could be done by Monday or Tuesday. Crews are using huge machinery to lay rock, sand and dirt to fill the hole, before paving.
The Authority says a 12-inch joint that connects to the Fish Springs water main failed. It appears to be a mechanical defect, not the pipe or corrosion. The Fish Springs water line was installed in 2006, a fairly new pipe that is supposed to last up to 50 years.
The sinkhole was initially 30 feet by 40 feet but crews believe it is bigger than that now after draining all of the water from this area.
