The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has been selected by the state for a new pilot program that will see an investigator look into the trends behind child deaths.Coroner Rusty Clevenger said the investigator’s salary will be paid for by the state and will only investigate children’s deaths within the county.”We have unsafe sleeping. We have unsafe bedding that’s with the children. We’ve got a number of things,” Clevenger said. “The education might help us, and there is education out there, but we need to bring a little bigger awareness.”Clevenger said he hopes the position could help inform on preventing future child deaths, guide education for parents and reduce the number of child deaths in the county and state.
