OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington House of Representatives is reviewing a bill that could make it easier for fire districts in rural counties to acquire emergency equipment.

House Bill 1047, introduced by the Finance Committee, proposes a sales and use tax exemption for fire and emergency medical apparatus, vehicles, machinery, and equipment purchased by these districts.

The bill was discussed in a preliminary hearing by the committee. If approved, starting Oct. 1, fire districts would no longer be required to pay sales and use tax on certain equipment used for fire prevention, suppression, and emergency medical services. The equipment is essential for public safety.

If passed, this measure could help reduce costs for rural fire districts and improve their capacity to respond to emergencies.
