Winter farmers markets serve as a lifeline for local businesses [Video]

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Farmers markets are often associated with the vibrant colors and fresh produce of summer. But in South Portland, a winter farmers market is proving vital to small businesses—even after the growing season ends.

Katie Reeves, owner of Electric Oven Bakeshop, is one of those small business owners benefiting from the winter market. For decades, baking was just a hobby for Reeves.

“I just took the plunge about a year and a half ago and started to bake full time,” Reeves shared.

Leaving her job to start a bakery with no storefront was a risk. Without a physical location, Reeves has had to rely on events like the South Portland Farmers Market to reach customers.

“Social media gets you some places, but it only gets you so far. You really have to get your product into peoples’ hands,” Reeves explained.
