(WFSB) – March 7th is National Slam the Scam Day. It was started by the Social Security Administration to raise awareness about Social Security imposter scams. It’s part of National Consumer Protection Week that focuses on raising awareness about all kinds of scams.

Often when people talk about scams it’s about how to protect the elderly from losing money, but new data shows the 18-24 age group on average loses more money when scammed than any other age group.

Hannah Latorre says its normal for people her age to meet others online.

“I know a lot people make friends on the internet, and it’s easy to do,” said Hannah Latorre.

When a friend told her a fellow UCONN student was selling Taylor Swift tickets online, she believed them.

“She had even sent her a picture of her student id, so she was like I’m real. This is me,” said Latorre.
