NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County has been awarded $36 million to provide high-speed internet in rural areas.

The South Carolina Broadband Office with the support of Charleston County officials, has awarded grants from the American Rescue Plan Act or ARPA to Internet Service Providers to provide high-speed broadband to over 4,500 homes and businesses within the County. The county received a total investment of $36 million.

The ARPA grant administered through the state of South Carolina and broadband office, was allocated $400 million to build out in areas throughout the state that had limited or no broadband access.

During the pandemic it became clear to county officials that reasonably performing internet is as critical as water and electricity.

County council member Jenny Costa Honeycutt says this will change lives.
