House of Interior announces funding to clean up WV legacy pollution [Video]

MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) -Government personnel came to the Richard Mine treatment plant to announce a 140 million dollar investment by the Biden administration into helping West Virginia clean up abandoned mine sites and other affected areas. Officials say it is a win for the state.

“West Virginia has some of the largest inventory of abandoned mine problems of any state in the entire country, and they are getting one of the largest infusions of money from the bipartisan infrastructure law. So, this investment is going to be a huge benefit to the state of West Virginia,” said Steve Feldgus, U.S Department of the Interior, land & minerals management.

One group that has long championed abandoned mine clean-ups is Friends of Deckers Creek. For years, the organization has tried to get Deckers Creek free of pollution that comes from metals from the Richard mine; today was a culmination of their efforts.
