Two verdicts have come back against Donald Trump so far in 2024, with fines and disgorgement totaling over half a billion dollars. One of those ($454 million after interest) is for his business fraud case, and the other ($83 million) is for the lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll, for defaming her after she came forward to share her experience being raped by Trump nearly 30 years ago.

It’s the second case Carroll has won against Trump, and what her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, saw in the previous case could have serious implications for the disgraced former president’s future legal defenses.

In that case, where the jury determined that he had, indeed, sexually assaulted the plaintiff, Trump was ordered to pay $5 million. He appealed that ruling last year, but to get a stay, had to put up the cash or bond.
