IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarifies that advisory on AI is not binding, aimed at socialmediacompanies [Video]

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw cleared the air on Monday about the latest advisory on artificial intelligence usage from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) saying that it is not binding on the intermediaries.

The advisory, which was released on March 1, urges “large platforms” to seek permission from the government before launching AI models, especially those under testing. Vaishnaw, during a press conference, said that advisories, including this one, do not have a binding effect.

“When there is an AI model, we need to see if it has been tested, there should be some responsibility in deploying AI models,” he said, adding that the government cannot permit the behaviour of launching untested models.

He also clarified that the advisory is applicable to AI models available on social media platforms, and not those for agriculture, healthcare, etc.
