RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – One of the items on Wednesday’s Rapid City Legal & Finance Committee agenda was acknowledgement of the January 2024 sales tax report. January is typically a slow month for sales, but the sales tax report did show some positive signs for the year ahead.

“January ended up being a good, solid month for the community,” said Daniel Ainslie, Rapid City finance director. “Our general sales tax was up 3.8%, that’s roughly in line with what we had budgeted for this year.”

Ainslie explained sales taxes contribute to Rapid City’s general fund, which allocates money to roads, public safety, parks, and more. The tourism sector of sales was down from January 2023, but most tourists come to Rapid City during warmer months and this doesn’t indicate a trend.
