The Missouri Supreme Court has ordered a new election to increase funding for the Kansas City Police Department. In November 2022, Missouri voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that would have required Kansas City to spend at least 25% of its general revenue on the police department. The city’s attorney and Mayor Quinton Lucas argued that the amendment, which they deemed an unconstitutional and unfunded mandate, would require the city to allocate a substantial amount of $37.8 million for its implementation.Lucas also argued the bill was in violation of the Hancock Amendment.
