Rapid City Street Maintenance Facility needs upgrade | News [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City’s Street Maintenance Facility is starting to show its age, prompting the public works department to consider how they can make upgrades.

The facility was built in the 1950’s and houses most of the city’s heavy vehicle fleet; snow plows, street cleaners, graders and other maintenance vehicles. Repairs are also made in the nearly 70-year-old building.

Some repairs, however, can’t be done in-house due to facility limitations, costing the city extra money.

Rapid City Public Works Program Development Manager Gerard Kemmerer says, “We’re limited with our bays and our personnel. So as we’re able to increase and have that larger facility that meets those industry standards, then we would be able to kind of see where savings is at that point.”
