Tesco loses 2.9m logo battle with Lidl [Video]

Tesco has been ordered to change its Clubcard logo after judges ruled it copied budget rival Lidl, writes Sean Poulter.

As shoppers struggle with grocery prices, the supermarkets have spent more than £2.5m (€2.92m) in a court battling over the branding.

Lidl, which uses a yellow circle in its main logo, took legal action after Tesco launched a similar yellow circle to promote its Clubcard scheme.

Judges in the UK have ruled in Lidl’s favour after the retailers traded allegations of copying and deceiving customers over more than two years.

Lidl said: “We are delighted to see that the Court of Appeal has now agreed with the High Court that Tesco’s use of its Clubcard logo is unlawful.”

Tesco, which confirmed it will issue a redesign, said: “We are disappointed with the judgment but we reassure customers it will in no way impact our Clubcard programme.
