Trade schools are growing in popularity across the nation [Video]

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -The average tuition and fees for a 4-year university can add up to about $20,000 a year, according to Business Insider. Cheaper and quicker options like trade schools, and certificate programs, are starting to see a surge in popularity.

With the older generation of trades workers nearing retirement, trade school instructors around Siouxland say there’s an even bigger need for workers. And, with such a big need, it could drive up the workers’ pay. It’s something that Northeast Community College’s HVAC instructor, John Nelson, called ‘the perfect storm’ that’s lead to increasing interest in the trades.

“We have a lot of available jobs, and people are starting to show interest in those jobs,” said Nelson. “They’ve also realized that the people that get their 4-year education but struggle to find a job, that problem doesn’t exist for these technical trades.”
