ANN ARBOR, MI — People walking into Ann Arbor’s Big City Small World Bakery are met with a smiley face on the front door, bright yellow walls and rows and rows of fresh pastries.

The bakery at 500 Miller Ave. has been around for decades, but owner Scott Newell took it over in 2001. Customers can find homemade traditional, gluten-free and vegan items made from scratch daily.

“The whole (thing is) ingredient integrity and just making things from scratch,” Newell said. “Our stuff tastes as good as it looks which is a key difference (from other bakeries).”

The business has around 90 menu items including lemon bars, cherry turnovers, chocolate eclairs, brownies, sandwiches, coffee, cookies, muffins, cakes, cupcakes, tarts and pies.

One of the top-selling menu items is the bakery’s take on the Hostess Ding Dong — two layers of chocolate cake filled with vanilla frosting covered with chocolate ganache.
