TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The Tucson Roadrunners may be moving to Tempe or they may not, according to owner Alex Meruelo.
The news of the possible move came on the same day the Phoenix Coyotes’ sale to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith was official.
In a radio interview that can be watched below, Meruelo said he sold the Coyotes to the Smiths but kept the Roadrunners, who were the AHL affiliate of the Coyotes.
“So when this transaction takes place, and it’s basically done, we plan on keeping all the hockey when it comes to business operations intact,” he said. “I also kept in this deal, which never happens, I kept the AHL team that plays currently in Tucson and we’re going to move them up to Mullett Arena.”
But later in the day, Meruelo talked with The Arizona Republic and said he may have spoken too soon.
