Twins send Varland to Triple-A, bring back Kepler [Video]

MINNEAPOLIS — Struggling starting pitcher Louie Varland will spend some time with Triple-A St. Paul to work out some of the kinks after four poor outings with the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins will also welcome back right fielder Max Kepler after he missed 13 games with a bruised right knee. Kelper has struggled mightily at the plate this season — 1-for-20 with six strikeouts — but he batted .400 in his rehabilitation assignment prior to rejoining the Twins.

Varland went 0-4 in his four starts with a 9.18 ERA, including a short outing Sunday that lasted just 2 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss to Detroit. The 26-year-old, who pitched effectively out of the bullpen late last season, earned a spot in the rotation in …
