Watch out for counterfeit postage stamps, post office warns [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The U.S. Postal Service says it’s seeing a rise in counterfeit postage stamps across the country. Federal officials are growing concerned.

There have been reports around the country of people noticing groups advertising postage stamps for sale, particularly on social media.

Officials say they’re seeing large discounts of up to 50% off. Of course these are fake and the listings should be a big red flag.

The counterfeit stamps come in a variety of designs and colors — but they aren’t coming from the United States. They’re coming from countries overseas, where intellectual property laws aren’t enforced.

The quality of fake stamps has improved dramatically in the past few years, but it still doesn’t help what you’re mailing get where you want it to go.

U.S. Postal Service officials say with new changes to the domestic mail, anything you send with counterfeit postage will be considered abandoned. They’re also subject to being opened and thrown out.
